MINISTER SHALA AVOIDS CONFLICT OF INTEREST

PRISHTINA, 18 January 2008 - Director of Anti-Corruption Agency Mr. Hasan Preteni welcomed on Friday (today) the willingness of the Minister of Economy and Finance Mr. Ahmet Shala to avoid conflict of interest, since the latter has renounced the functions of oversight and management he had in "The Cambridge School" and "British-American Bookshop".
On 14 January 2008 Director of ACA sent an official letter to Minister Shala through which he warned him that the parallel exercise of the position of Minister and activity in profit organizations is considered a conflict of interest by Anti-Corruption Law.
"Based on Article 29.1 of the Anti-Corruption Law, you are warned that within 30 days of receipt of this letter, you must designate for one of these functions. We remind you that on your decision should be informed the Anti-Corruption Agency within the time specified above", said the official letter sent to Minister Mr. Shala.
On the other hand Minister Shala responded on 17 January confirming his withdrawal from "The Cambridge School, as well as from the ownership in the 'British-American Bookshop", and following the instructions of Prime Minister Mr. Hashim Thaci, on 10 January 2008.
Welcoming the action of Minister Shala, director of ACA Hasan Preteni said - "his prompt response is very encouraging and should be a model for other institutions".
Kosovo Anti-Corruption Agency sent a letter of warning to avoid conflict of interest to another senior official of the government of Kosovo, and expects a response within 30 days.
